Reimbursement of the tuition fee

You can be reimbursed for your tuition fees for different reasons. However, your application for reimbursement will have to be filed within a certain period of time.

What valid reasons for reimbursement are there?

You have valid reasons for reimbursement of the amount payable to the University of Vienna if you have paid your tuition fee and one of the following applies:

  • you have disenrolled from your studies at the University of Vienna before the beginning of the semester (term) and have not been admitted to studies at any other Austrian university;
  • you have completed your studies at the University of Vienna before the end of the extended admission period and have not been admitted to (continuing) studies at either the University of Vienna, or any other Austrian university;
  • you were admitted to studies at the University of Vienna in the previous semester (term) and you have disenrolled from studies before the end of the extended admission period; furthermore, you may not have taken any examination during the relevant semester, you may not have submitted any scientific work for evaluation and you may not have been admitted to studies at any other Austrian university;
  • your application for remission of tuition fee or for academic leave of absence was approved after you paid your tuition fee;
  • you have paid excess tuition fee (for example if you complete a study segment or a study for which you paid full tuition fees before the end of the extended admission period);
  • your tuition fee payment fell short of the prescribed amount, thus invalidating your admission to studies at the University of Vienna.

By when and how can applications for reimbursement be submitted?

To file an application for reimbursement, please send the following documents by email (erlass.rueckerstattung.zulassung@univie.ac.at), fax or terrestrial mail to the Admission Office:

  • the application form
  • a copy or scan of your student’s ID

If you can make a claim of tuition fee remission, you will also be required to submit an application for remission and the appropriate documents.

Please note that due to organizational reasons the University of Vienna is not able to provide you with information about the current status of your application!

Applications for reimbursement shall be submitted before the following deadlines:

  • for the winter semester: the next 31 March
  • for the summer semester: the next 30 September

If you sent the filled in and signed form too late, your application will be rejected without exception (a refund is not possible then).

If you ask for a reimbursement timely, but the necessary proofs are missing, a reasonable time limit for late filing of these documents will be given.

By when and how can applications for reimbursement of students' union fees be submitted?

If you have only been prescribed the payment of students' union fees and no tuition fees, please send your application for remission to the Admission Office (see above for details).

If you have been prescribed the payment of both tuition fees and students' union fees, you need to submit two distinct applications for remission: one with the Admission Office and one with students' union (ÖH).

In case you were only prescribed the payment of students' union fees and you inadvertently paid these twice, please submit your application for remission to the Admission Office. In case you paid at two different universities or Universities of Applied Sciences (FH) for the same semester (term), please submit your application for remission to the students' union directly.

What happens after you have filed an application for remission?

Information regarding the outcome of your application will be emailed to your webmail address (aMatriculationnumber@unet.univie.ac.at). Should your application be approved, the sum due will be transferred within four weeks of your application to a bank account of your choice.
